Preparing for A-Level Mathematics

To make the start of your A-Level Maths or Further Maths course as smooth as possible, it is important that you are confident with the algebra, numeracy and trigonometry skills from Higher GCSE.

As part of your transition to A-Level Maths, you will complete a diagnostic test. This helps us identify any GCSE topics that may need some additional practice before September.

If you scored less than 60% on the diagnostic test, you are required to complete the preparation booklet before your first Maths lesson in September and hand it in to your teacher.

If you scored 60% or above, the booklet is optional, but we strongly recommend completing it as a useful way to refresh key GCSE skills and build confidence for the start of the course.

There should not be any new material in the booklet. If you need to revise a topic, use your GCSE class notes or the resources linked alongside the relevant sections.

Additional preparation

We also recommend using the AMSP Essential Skills resources, which are designed to support the transition from GCSE to A-Level Mathematics and cover many of the skills used in the booklet.
