WORK EXPERIENCE All Lower Sixth Students will have the opportunity to spend at least one week in July on work experience in a placement of their choice. What do YOU want to do? Gain an insight into the work style of an engineer? Write for the ‘Observer’ Follow a case at Warwick Crown Court? Work in a Birmingham stockbrokers? Research archives at the Coventry Records Office? Assist in a veterinary operation? At Castle, Work Experience represents the vocational link between your course, any higher education plans and your career interests. In the Sixth Form, decision making is an important responsibility of all students, and Work Experience will be an integral part of your decision making process. For most of you Work Experience in the Lower Sixth will be the first stage of your investigation into higher education opportunities and preparation for the decisions which you will have to make in September and October of your Upper Sixth year. This emphasis will lead to a specialised, individually designed work placement, tailored to your needs. We recognise the growing maturity and independence of our students and we consider that it is appropriate that you arrange your own placements. This means that you will have the responsibility for seeking advice, discussing ideas, selecting companies, writing letters of application and arranging interviews. It will be especially important for you to negotiate a programme of work which suits your requirements. If this sounds daunting, don’t be put off. The school will provide
a full support programme, together with careers, tutorial and subject
teachers’ advice and guidance. Careers for Advanced Students Your time at the Castle Sixth Form Centre will pass quickly which means that career planning must keep pace with your academic studies. Most of the careers programme happens during the Lower Sixth year to enable you to complete applications for higher education or employment during the autumn of the Upper Sixth. January to March ‘Careers’ begins
with you being asked to choose the kind of May and June During the third term ‘careers’
is central to the tutorial programme. Answers will be given to questions
like: From May onwards you will spend time on research and consultation. You
will be encouraged to make use of one or two carefully selected university
open days. The whole yeargroup attends the UCAS conference where they
can visit stalls from universities around the country. Visits are arranged
to colleges at Oxford and Cambridge. Throughout the year you may take the opportunity to discuss your personal
position with All students have unrestricted access to the Careers Library which offers
access to a wide range of careers information, reference books, prospectuses
for local colleges of further education and all United Kingdom universities.
Use of computer software programmes like Kudos and Higher Ideas is strongly encouraged, and the newly refurbished Careers Library is equipped with four computers each with internet access. If all goes well, by the end of the summer term you should have two or three serious options in your sights to be the basis of applications as soon as we return from the summer holiday. Then you will be shown how to complete the application procedure online so as to give you the best possible chance of success.
