Politics AS and A2 courses at Castle Sixth Form

You will not have studied Politics at GCSE and it is important that you speak to Mr. Curran if you require further information about the course.

What is Politics?

People are social animals and choose to live together in groups. Because they live together in groups, there is a need to make decisions about how resources are to be shared out or how conflicts that arise can be resolved. The study of politics is the study of how such decisions are made and how power is exercised in society.

The key areas of study at AS level will examine the importance of political participation and democracy, elections, the role of political parties and pressure groups, the role of parliament, the exercise of power by government, constitutional and electoral reform and judges aqnd civil liberties.

The A2 section of the course will examine political ideologies - Liberalism, Conservatism, Socialism, Anarchism, Fascism, Nationalism, Feminism, Ecologism and Multiculturalism.
Students will be expected to subscribe to the Politics Review journal, to read newspapers to keep up with current political issues and to watch news coverage and current affairs programmes on television.

The AS programme will include a visit to the House of Commons and the House of Lords
and an opportunity to meet with your Local M.P.
