LEISURE MANAGEMENT STUDIES

The Leisure sector is one of the fastest growing and exciting sectors within the UK and this A level course will give students a comprehensive understanding of this industry. After completing this course, students will have the knowledge and skills to either pursue a managerial career within the Leisure and Sports sector or simply apply these skills in one of the many degree paths that this course leads to.

Organisation and Content of the Course

The Lower Sixth year provides students with the opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of the Leisure sector.

At A2 level students have the opportunity to apply their theoretical understanding to the many different Leisure industries.

What areas do you study?

Working practices in leisure, the leisure customer, leisure in action, employment in leisure, current issues in leisure, the influence of the media on the leisure industry and the reasons for participation and non-participation in leisure activities.

How does this course differ?

Students will regularly have the opportunity to visit different Leisure companies and listen to the expertise of people who have established successful careers within this sector. This includes attending workshops at Alton Towers and other similar companies.

The course is two thirds assessed through assignments/reports and therefore it develops the research, analytical and decision-making skills that employers and universities are looking for. It also rewards hard-work and it is also more vocational than many other A level courses.

Who teaches this course?

The course is delivered by the Business & Economics department

What can I do with this A Level?

Leisure Studies combines well with most A Level subjects, especially PE and Business Studies. You will find the subject useful for careers in Leisure, Sport, Teaching, Event Planning, Sports Management and Business Management.

Why study Leisure?

With the Olympics coming in 2012, this will only further fuel the career opportunities that currently exist within this fast growing sector. Employment and Managerial opportunities within the Leisure industry are very good.

Are there any specific entry requirements?

You must gain 5 G.C.S.E.s at grade C or above to study an A Level subject.
