| The Times Spelling Bee |
 |
Further to their impressive win in the local heat of the Times
Spelling Bee the Kenilworth School Year 7 Spelling team travelled
to Leicester on Friday 22nd May to compete in the Midlands semi-final.
The quality of the competition, and the difficulty of the words
(such as synthesis, tabernacle and bourgeois) were clearly much
higher at this level but the students performed really well and
remained competitive throughout, finishing in 3rd place.
Congratulations to Sophia Warren, Jessica Smith, Georgia Levens
and Monica Shah for their excellent behaviour and coolness under
pressure. They were a credit to themselves, and to the school.

During the second half of the summer term some 150
Year 10 students completed their practice expedition, walking from
the Kenilworth area to Hatton Scout camp and back. They are now
completing the Volunteering, Skill and Sport sections, and looking
foreward to the Assessed Expedition in September. |
Silver
The Silver Practice Expedition took place
in the White Peak area of Derbyshire. One group had a rude awakening
when a sheep managed to get into their tent. All the students coped
well with the hilly terrain.

The Assessed Expedition was completed in the equally challenging
conditions of Exmoor |
| One group camped on a hillside at a remote farm. |

| String Orchestra
at Symphony Hall |
 |
This summer the school's String Orchestrata celebrated number
of firsts. Its first hip-hop collaboration, its first foray into
the world of improvised jazz and its first (and hopefully not
last) playing at Symphony Hall in Birmingham.
As part of the Music for Youth festival, the orchestra won the
right to play for and be judged by expert musicians at Symphony
Hall.
In addition to this, the early part of the day was used to re-invent
Greig's 'Hall of the Mountain King' in a hip-hop style, working
with an urban producer. The results were ... interesting!

| Food Technology Visit to Cornwall |
 |
On a sunny morning recently Yr10 Catering and
Food Technology students set off for a four day food experience
in Cornwall. Arriving some hours later at the Headlands Hotel
in Newquay overlooking a sandy beach we were met by the Catering
Manager for a tour of the kitchens and the hotel.
Over the next few days the students visited the Eden project to
learn how food grows and how they feed thousands of people each
week. There was also a tour of a bakery in Padstow where the students
made Cornish pasties. We also visited an organic farm and Rick
Stein's cookery school where we took part in a cookery lesson
creating a range of fish dishes. Evenings were spent bowling,
visiting an aquarium and eating out at local restaurants in Newquay
where we were staying. A great time was had by all with many students
wanting to repeat the experience again next year

| Observing the Night Sky |
| In March the Science department invited year 7, 8 and 9 pupils and
their families to join us for an evening of observation using the
school’s new telescope. After an extremely cloudy afternoon
(and two very worried Science teachers) the sky cleared and left an
excellent view of the moon and stars.
We had the use of 3 telescopes, 2 were used to observe the details
on the moons surface and the other was used to observe Saturn (after
some technical difficulties). 50 people attended and all got a chance
to observe objects through each telescope, it was great to have
whole families involved and we look forward to seeing more people
at Jupiter watch in the Autumn term

| Skiing |
 |
The party left from school to drive by coach to La Thuile in
Aosta Valley, Northern Italy, arriving at lunch time the following
day. The resort look quiet but snow conditions were good. We checked
into our apartments at La Planible where we had one bedroom apartments,
they were small but had everything we needed. We went to explore
the village and have lunch at a local restaurant. The afternoon
was taken up with fitting of skis and boots and having a snowball
fight.
Ater breakfast the following day we went up the gondola lift with
our instructor called Gregor and went off for a days skiing in
the shadows of Mont Blanc. The sun was out and ski conditions
were excellent.
