Technology: Product Design - AS and A2 courses

Examination Board: AQA

What is Product Design?

Product Design is the opportunity for students to follow a broad multi-disciplinary course to design and manufacture products in 3D design or Textiles. This involves progressive engagement with a problem which requires thinking, creating, inventing, predicting, experimenting, decision making, constant evaluation and where necessary modification. It is in order to apply it to the solution of practical problems which arise in everyday life and in industrial and commercial contexts

The key areas of study at AS level are Materials and Components, their properties and functions, Design and Market Influences which look at past and present design and its integration into society, and a practical based section related to the individuals Designing and Manufacturing project.

The A2 section of the course builds on the knowledge gained at AS in both Materials and Components and Design and Market influences. In addition a detailed Product Study of a particular item e.g. a digital camera, the Bio-form bra is required. There is also the opportunity to design and manufacture an advanced product in the material area of choice.

In addition Students will be expected to read and collect information from a variety of sources to broaden their understanding of both past and present desiigners and their work.

Visits to enhance the programme are provided and include international visits to places such as Florence/Milan and national and local visits to exhibitions of note e.g. Design Museum, Tate Modern, V&A in London.
