R.S. is a dynamic area of study in the Humanities Department. Pupils are taken on trips and outings to the local area and further afield, such as to a Sikh Temple in Southall, London.

There is a very diverse range of teaching and learning styles used in R.E. lessons across the school years. Opportunities for drama, sculptures, models, stories, movies, orchestra recitals even! are incorporated into the learning of the pupils, as well as the usual. So there is something for everyone and most enjoy some aspect.

We are privileged as a department to be able to draw on the Kenilworth Youth for Christ team (led by Chris and Tina Adams) to come and lead one or two lessons per year group per year. They come as ‘resident experts’ in Christianity and will answer any questions the pupils have in this area. They also run lunchtime clubs such as Scape on a Thursday. Recently they led the ‘Encounter Jesus’ lessons which pupils appreciate very much as they are able to think about the life and ministry of Jesus and any relevance this has to their lives.

It is hoped that in the academic year beginning September 2008 a ‘Souled out’ hut will be able to be built. This is planned to be an area for pupils of any (or no) religious persuasion to go, meditate and be still. This is a real step forward in making spiritual provision for pupils at Kenilworth School.

R.E. is a compulsory short-course subject at Key Stage 4, but pupils undoubtedly recognise the benefit of this as they achieve very high grades in this course of study (amongst the highest across the school). The topics are very interesting and up to date; from the way the world came into existence; issues relating to the sanctity of life, abortion and euthanasia; to the way Muslim families are constructed and the values taught within. The three world religions of Christianity, Judaism and Islam are studied in this course.

R.S. has always been a popular subject for uptake at Key Stage 4 and 5. Results are very good and this is a result of hard work from both staff and pupils. The two main religions of study in this course are Christianity and Sikhism.
