French German Spanish

Students study the language and socio-cultural aspects of life in French, German or Spanish speaking countries through a range of topics. Use of the target language is encouraged throughout. A wide range of activities is used to ensure that lessons are lively and productive. Students work from a course book which is supplemented by a grammar work book and activities on computers situated in the languages area. In addition we use satellite TV to provide up to date news broadcasts and programmes, the language laboratory, video, DVD, film and song and reading materials from magazines, newspapers and the Internet. Students engage in role play, discussion and debate in the target language.

AS: The topics for AS Languages are:
• Aspects of Daily Life.

• Leisure and Entertainment
Education and Training

A2: The topics for A2 languages are:
• Society
• Science and Technology
• The Environment

What can I do with this qualification?
Employers today are increasingly looking for language based qualifications. Modern Linguists can look to Europe for many exciting employment opportunities. As well as specialist language courses, many universities offer language modules alongside a huge variety of subjects. These include Engineering, Law, Business Studies, Science, Sociology etc.

Are there any specific entry requirements?
In addition to the Castle requirement of five GCSEs it would be advisable to have at least a B at GCSE. Ideally you will have taken Higher Level papers, including Higher Level Writing. If you have done coursework you should have gained at least A/B.
