The Key Stage Three course in ICT follows on from the experiences that pupils have gained at Key Stage Two. Most of our Year 7 pupils are able to use software for Word Processing, DTP, Presentation and Spreadsheets.
We are currently implementing the National Strategy which seeks to improve ICT capability at Key Stage Three across the country. The themes followed by the strategy are:
Each theme requires pupils to Review , Modify and Evaluate work as it progresses
|
| Finding Things Out |
This theme allows pupils to combine information from a range of sources and encourages them to integrate work from various applications, for instance; a chart from a spreadsheet is integrated into a word-processed document that contains relevant graphical material. The source of the material might be web pages, the computer system, scanned material, library sources and other research materials. Pupils are encouraged to search and select information that is relevant and validated, rejecting spurious, inaccurate data. They learn to use logical operators (AND, OR and NOT) to interrogate large databases of information in order to refine their searches.
Pupils develop their ability to make enquiries and to build databases that can be used to compare and analyse data. Data is also analysed by using spreadsheet software that can produce graphical outputs for further analysis and interpretation.
|
| Developing Ideas and Making Things Happen |
This theme is about what users can do with information once it has been collected. It encourages pupils to explore ways of transforming, developing and displaying information so that it is best communicated to others. It includes:
- Design and implementation of ICT systems to process information
- Developing a systems approach by using flow charts and diagrams
- Evaluating the solution with reference to the end user.
- Modelling data and using formulae to govern rules
- Using spreadsheets to manipulate data and explore relationships
- Understand how to control and monitor physical devices by using computer devices.
Pupils develop an appreciation of computer systems and how they can be used to enhance daily life.
|
| Exchanging and Sharing Information |
Pupils gain an understanding of how to use computer systems to display, develop and communicate information to others. They learn to use all of the basic functions of the common applications and integrate them together. The overriding aims are that they learn:
- It is important to be selective and sensitive in presenting information to different audiences.
- Critical reflection on the way others present information can reinforce their own work.
- The target audience is very important and the communication must be carefully planned.
- Developing and refining their presentations is very important and team-work may be essential

| Assesment at Key Stage 3 |
Assessment of pupils' work at key stage three is currently a portfolio of evidence that is collected over each school year. The cumulative evidence is used to place pupils at the relevant level for Key Stage 3; Levels 5, 6 and 7 are the most likely outcomes. The result is communicated to parents at the end of year 9 along with other KS3 results. The Dfes aim to develop electronic tests for Key Stage Three ICT by 2007. |
