What is History?

History is the study of our human past. It is an enquiry into the lives and actions of men, women and children. By studying the feelings and actions of other people it may help us better to understand our own feelings.

It helps us to understand the present. The past and present are not separate areas, they are part of a continuous process.

History is about change. It is especially concerned with the causes of change. It helps us understand that change and progress are not the same.

History is about enquiry. Knowing and understanding about the past is based on evidence. Using evidence helps us to develop a mature questioning approach. History helps us to appreciate that people share different views and opinions about events.
